Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find the relationships among Berg¢¥s balance, Activities of Daily Living(ADL) and depression for the elderly persons. The falls should be a well-known factor of morbidity in older people. The fear of falling affects the elders¢¥ quality of life and may limit their daily activities. Sixty-six community-dwelling elderly persons were recruted to administer three instruments of Berg¢¥s Balance Scale, Depression Scale, and ADL Scale in this study. There was a significant positive relationship between balance and ADL (r = .65, p $lt; .01). However, there were no significant relationships between balance and depression, and between ADL and depression. The findings in this study have implications that health professionals must assess carefully old persons¢¥ balances status, and thus the strategies to improve the balance must be included in their care plans because the improvement of functional abilities of elders can affect their qualities of life.
